A Letter to My Dog
Dear Puppeh Blue....
I can never begin to fully express the joy you have brought back into my life! I loved you from the moment I saw your sad eyes on the internet, the night before I met you. I loved you even more when you reached out to me from your cell in doggie jail. And I loved you still more when you were so easy to train and showed such glee at our daily walks.
I know I've been a difficult momma for you. You clearly don't know what to make of me: I'm loud, I chase you, I throw myself on the floor and roll at your feet. I never punish you for being on the sofa I bought for doggie cuddles... that seems to blow your mind daily! But I'm learning... too much petting scares you. I try to get up and get away before you do but I'm old and my body hurts. I'm just not as fast as you. And I'm so sorry. I wish petting and loving and cuddling didn't scare you so. I've heard some dogs can take years to figure that one out... And that's fine. I'm not going anywhere. And neither are you.
I know the concept of forever home is not something you get....having lived three years of your life somewhere before finding yourself in doggie jail. Then adopted and returned within three days several different times. Let me just tell you softly (cause loud will scare you) and clearly... those people were idiots!!! I've had a number of special and amazing dogs... I like to think I have a knack for finding special and amazing dogs... And without diminishing the love I feel for those girls, I can honestly say, you top the list!!! I've never met a sweeter, more agreeable, eager to please pup than you Macy Blue.
And I have complete faith that one day, I'm going to look into those sweet brown eyes of yours and they won't be blue any more!
Love you always, Your crazy, forEVER Mom

A Great Big Old THANK YOU!
I'm sitting here sobbing, just marveling at the kindness of others. Of people I don't even know! That a silly little blog that got taken over by a rotten dog with a huge personality could touch people on the other side of the planet... it's all too much to take in!
Thank you all SO MUCH! From the heart of my bottom, THANK YOU!
Mabel Lou at the levy on 3.14.14
That so many people would come together and donate wonderful things to be auctioned off to help me pay off Mabel's final surgery is unbelievable to me. That people would come together and bid and even pay money to see Easy in a mankini or buy Molly's bra boggles my mind!
I can't begin to thank everyone who donated or made a purchase from the auction! Your kindness and generosity have touched me so deeply! And Stella was a master at keeping it all organized. And Easy and Misaki helped her a lot! Hugs and scritches to all of you!!!
I received a nice fat check from the auction that will allow me to pay off most of the ginormous vet bill and allow me to make reasonable payments for the balance. For the first time since my girl passed away, I can breathe a little!

And THANK YOU ALL for donating and buying goodies!!!

A Lot of Help from My Friends!
Wow... you just never know when you touch someone's life... how having a silly dog blog about the antics of one very bossy rottenweiler might impact someone else! Who knew what Mabel Lou would bring into my life?? Aside from the real life Creekerati friends, she's brought all of you! I'm feeling very loved to today!
I was very touched when Mollie and Alfie's mom suggested hosting an auction to help me pay off Mabel's final vet bill...but couldn't really figure out how it may manifest itself...but boy has it EVER! Bloggers from all over have donated and the auction is running NOW
And Walter and Millie's mom did the LOVELIEST write up in addition to donating to the auction! (I should have her write for my fan page!)
Wine Stopper in my trunk show
I haven't even mentioned it here but, the venue where I was selling jewelry in person burned down 3 days after Mabel Lou passed!
It's been such a rough month... This was one of Mabel's favorite places to go with her pal Ruby! They had the best bacon and I would get an order and share most of it with the dogs. It just all feels like SO much loss... in the past few months, we've lost three from our extended hiking pack, Mabel, the bakery and our buddy Hank has cancer and is not eating.
But I have to come out of my grief and deal with my bills! And, thanks to my friends, I've been on fire! Realizing I would not need my jewelry stash for about a year, I got it all out and created a trunk show on Facebook!
I've got several shopping categories: bracelets / bracelet beads, necklaces, earrings, bar ware, beads and orphan beads and weirdos!
I'm told that even if you are not on Facebook, you can still view the auction. Feel free to bid by email or if that's not up your alley, I do have a website with about 100 items.
Just be sure to read the MAIN post on the auction page for navigation tips. Very helpful if you aren't sure about maneuvering Facebook.
In addition, if you are on Facebook, I'm giving away prizes!!! There is a $40 gift cert drawing. for sharing the main post about the auctions. And, that's not all!!! I'm having a $50 gift cert drawing for first prize and earrings for 2nd place for everyone who likes, comments or shares any item from the auction! Likes get one entry, comments get two and shares get three. (Guess what I'm spending Saturday counting???)

Oh Just Get Over Yourself!
I've been terrified of this post. I was petrified about what to write. Yes, I've hit post number 1000. It just feels like I should write something profound or interesting. But in the end, I've decided just to get it over with!
No, I had no idea what this blog would do to me back in November of 2006 when I started this journey. I gave it very little thought. I had been reading Velvet's blog and many on her blog list back then and after cautiously commenting on some, I felt I had something to say and took the plunge. I never dreamed it would lead to 1000 posts. I never really thought I had that much to say!
Knowing I would hit 1000 (I thought it would be last year), I started a page (never published so don't bother looking!) called Essential Creekhiker. It was to feature one or two of my favorite posts from each month of this blog. Which led to Essential Mabel Lou... because she is my co-star and #1 muse. I started re-reading this blog from the begining... I got bored before I finished three years! If it bores me, it probably bores you too...
But I was always a writer.
I wrote as part of my job creating bids for commercial directors. Ad agencies are incapable of understanding budgets and so a "sales" letter must accompany every bid. Often I would be sitting at my computer in some motorhome on the set of some commercial and the writers would be quibbling over dialog. I would spit out the fix over my shoulder and go on with my work. I can't tell you how many times that happened!
I remember writing an addition to Rodgers and Hammerstein's King Arthur on the fly back in high school when a temperamental make up artist caused Morgan Le Fay to miss her entrance.
When I left my "real" production job to go through surgery and run my own business, I didn't miss commuting or people. I missed writing. I joined a local writing group. It was a blast. I wrote some of my best stuff ever. But then the men in the group started fighting over every little comma and almost came to blows. I was done.
And then came blogging. I've met a number of bloggers in person since starting this process. I was most star struck to meet Velvet... she's one of my favorite writers and I simply adore her. And I've encouraged many others to blog. Taking photos while hiking, I explained to my hiking buddy what "blog fodder" was and that she could see pics of her rotts on my blog. She started reading all the dog blogs and even started her own. It still smarts that she gets so many more comments than me. But I blog about too many subjects to really worry about that.
The Unfaithful Writer Tries to Find Herself...
Yes, this may have been my first blog... but it's not my one and only. I quickly realized what a good business practice it is to have a blog. And I tired of posting beads and my sales stuff here. It felt sacrilegious! So I started a bead blog. I soon realized that the rss feed set up of a blog and places like etsy and artfire - that allows for instantaneous sharing when a new item is listed - would be excellent for a website! So after a few feeble attempts at my own dot com for my glass beads, I restarted it using a word press template with a shopping cart built in. All because I had learned to blog! So, that gets us to three!
I manage a team blog for other bead makers. Four!
Because I am forever in search of a gig or way to make some money, I needed a place to stash some of my published work. So... writing blog! (Sorely in need of updates!) That's Five!
Along the way, another friend started learning how to actually make money blogging. Not just pennies but a living! I was already curious about some of the repeat hits I get on this blog. A post about taking the CBEST constantly gets hits. Another post on a long cancelled tv show that jumped the shark gets tons of traffic to this day. A rejected article I wrote for aol about gifts for pet lovers...tons o hits. The post I wish I had not titled "Doggie Porn" ... way too many hits (Ewwww! Creepy!!).
All of this led to my "retail adventures in blogging" trying to find a way to get a blog popular enough to make a little dough. Jump the Shark and Retail Rants and Raves were utter failures. (Six and Seven! OMG! I'm tired!)
I suddenly realized, I really "should" have a blog for my day job...food safe rubber stamps as too many bloggers were writing about the technique and leading to much misinformation that can get people sick. So... Food Safe Rubber Stamping started last year! EIGHT!
And finally... I found my niche with number nine. In March of last year, I was googling the terms "glass beads" and "lampwork" and realized that no ONE artist was EVER going to crack the "Chinese Wall" of garbage glass beads on the internet. But... if a bunch of us were to use ONE public site over and over, we could make it to the first page of Google. And Glass Beads Daily was born. It has been successful beyond my dreams!
And no, number nine won't be my last... I have at least two more up my sleeve!
I realize that blogging came along at just the right time for me. I was working alone and from home. It was a creative outlet that allowed me to promote my businesses and connect with others.
I think I only have two or three readers from the beginning and I'm happy they've stayed with considering all the changes this blog has undergone. And though my fingertips may wander... this blog is home. It's more ME than any of the others.
And just for the record:
This is actually my 1006th post...if you count drafts. There is a post for Mr. Chewy pending. A post about my New Year's Resolution which is starting to bore me. Both of those will see the light of day.
But I have others I'm not sure why I started:
But then if you count those others:
Fire Divas - 142
Holly's Folly Beads - 681
Writer Holly Dare - 28
Retail Rants n Raves - 7
Jump The Shark - 4
Food Safe Rubber Stamping - 26
Glass Beads Daily - 278
This post is actually my 2,172nd post... I don't know what I was so afraid of. No big deal, really.

- A post about things I've had to rent. From the mundane helicopters, private jets, cranes and gorilla suits to the far more interesting submarines, reindeer and a working prison.
- A post titled What Not to do to the Dying - my way of lashing out at some of the stupid things people said and did while my sister was sick. I may never have the guts to share that.
- A Things that Make you go Hmmm... too short to bother
- A post about the best day of my life... that has no point

About Her Other Nickname
All good dogs have many nicknames and I've written about Mabel's ad infinitum! I finally realized this particular nickname came into being - or shall I say was "earned" - a few years ago at our pal Chloe's hot dog party for the pack at the creek!
Mabel Lou was such a brat at that party, it's when the rest of our hiking buddies started referring to her as "Queen Bitch of Everything!"
She ran around and stole party hats. If the other dogs were rough-housing, she had to be the roughest. If things got too rough... a number determined solely by Miss Mabel's mood at any given time... she had to be the one to put the others in their place. She had to have the best ball... be in front of every hike. I get it! My dog is bossy. And yes, she IS bitchy!
The other dogs just let her have her way... it clearly means more to her than the other, more laid back animals in our pack. They listen to her annoying scream barking; they roll their eyes behind her back; they feign respect.
So I guess I shouldn't be surprised at the gift the RottRovers gave her for Christmas! They had Millie and Walter's Mom, Cindy, make a kerchief just for the Queen!
I just love the bones and paw prints in the jewels of the crown! Here's a shot of theprincess Queen modeling it while we were out to brunch:
Well, I guess if the title fits, she must wear it! Naturally, she tried to roll in the mud with it on! OY!
Don't be mislead by her innocent looks:
She earned her title! She's certainly the Queen Bitch at home!
You can find custom kerchiefs in Cindy's Thread Craft on Etsy.

Our Visit with Levi and Gimpy
It's so neat when you get to meet blogger friends in real life! Yesterday, I took Mabel to meet my first blog friend ever, Velvet Sacks. Velvet's blog is what made me realize I should blog too, so you can say it was life changing!
I had met Velvet years ago but when she said Mabel Lou would be welcome to come visit, I jumped at the chance for a change of scenery for the girl. Mabel is used to going everywhere with me and between the heat, Granny's old car with no a/c (not that the Mabel Jeep has a/c)!!), and me being gone to the hospital so much, Mabel has been stuck at Granny's with the occaisional trip down the street to see her cousin.
I was most excited to meet Velvet's boys, Levi and Gimpy! They are so cute! The girl KNEW she was going somewhere... and just knocked me into a falling dive trying to get into the car! Here she is...ready to roll...
Here's Gimpy and Levi after one of our ball playing sessions outside. The boys heard my car and came running to the fence with a ball! What a pair!
Mabel was too hot to be anything but calm... thank goodness. She did snoop in every single room! Velvet and the boys were so kind about that!
This is one of our play sessions. It was so hot, they were brief. Gimpy always allows his big brother to get the ball. On the few times he got it, he would drop it before they got to me, allowing Levi to bring it on home!
Meanwhile, Mabel Lou explained to Velvet just how much petting she requires of new friends...
I kept playing with those boys. They have the most amazing "old soul" eyes! They are both sweethearts but... I have to admit to having a huge crush on Gimpy! He's SUCH a lover... kisses and cuddles galore... just my kind of pup!
We had such a nice visit and it was just wonderful to be able to pet those handsome boys in the furs!!!

Pip And Puddles Appreciation Day
Today is a very special day! All of Blogville has declared today to be Pip and Puddles Appreciation Day! What a perfect way to thank our furiends for all the smiles and making us laugh so much!
For this special occaision, Pip has been bestowed the title of "Blogville King of Cheeseburgers" and Puddles has been titled "Blogville Queen of Merriment and Mayhem" - very fitting eh???
Well, it's good thing they didn't let their pals here in La La Land christen them with new titles... We were all thinking "Pot Pups" might be more appropriate!
Whatever title these two hold, they will always be King and Queen of our hearts! We love you Pip and Puddles!

Pip's Bucket List Tour Stops In Sunland
Mabel Lou here. My Mom is making me allow Barticus, a/k/a
Farticus, co-write this post for our furiend Pip’s Bucket List Blog Tour.
We all thought we would show Pip and Puddles
our creek and then introduce them to one of our favorite new treats. We were
quivering with excitements at the thought of meeting our Internet furiends!
Pip and Puddles were to meet us at the creek and they were a little late. We feared they might have stopped at one of our "green" pharmacies like they did on the way to see the Rottrovers the other day. We have heard rumors they've been using Pip's new med card all over the place!
It turns out we just should have been more explicit about parking instructions. Puddles was so mesmerized by our shallow flowing waters, she drove right in!
It turns out we just should have been more explicit about parking instructions. Puddles was so mesmerized by our shallow flowing waters, she drove right in!
I was non-pulsed by the car parked in my creek, naturally! Truth be told, it happens several times a year!
“Com’on in guys! The water is lovely!”
Pip and Puddles were not so sure they wanted to swim… the
water is kinda chilly this time of year. So Bart enlisted his mom to demonstrate
one of his favorite activities at the creek: catching rocks!
BART: I LOVE to catch rocks! I love to dive for rocks and
chase rocks and hide rocks. But catching rocks my mom tosses is the BEST!
MABEL: He’s CLEARLY been hit in the head with a few as well!
Pip and Puddles weren’t too sure about this activity either…
what to do??? I took them over to the pond for some tall grass sniffies.
Everyone loves sniffies!
But it turns out, Pip and Puddles were so much shorter than
us, we kept losing track of them in the big tall grass! Can you even SEE Pip in the tall grasses???
We lost track of
Puddles altogether for a bit until I remembered one of the local creek
residents always has a nice selection of beer!
Puddles apparently had made a friend and shared a few bevvies! At least they recycle!
But she wasn’t going to leave Pip unattended for long. She caught up with us just as I was trying to get “someone” to quit messing around….
But she wasn’t going to leave Pip unattended for long. She caught up with us just as I was trying to get “someone” to quit messing around….
BART: I wasn’t messing around… it’s just that grass makes me
iiitttchhhh!
MABEL: Whatever… I was a little worried that our creek
adventure was a bust so I suggested our Moms drive since the Pip n Puddle
mobile was still drying out. We went up and over our mountain to La Canada where they
have a new hamburger restaurant called Hamburger Habit... Boy is it ever addictive! Pip perked up at this news! You know he loves
his cheeseburgers!
I explained to him that we were going to have something
better than cheeseburgers! Pip was simply flabbergasted! He couldn’t imagine
what on earth that could be. We got to the Hamburger Habit and waited patiently
with Bart’s Mom outside while my mom got the foodables. Pip and Puddles were ever so patient as the line was long. They were way better behaved that "someone" we know.
BART: Want foodables NOW!
Since Pip REALLY wanted a cheeseburger, my mom
got us some. She cut them up into bite sized pieces while we waited…
BART: …and waited and waited and …
MABEL: We got the idea Bart!
My mom always just gives me a
burger with no bun. Pip just rolled his eyes and assumed it was some California
low carb diet thing. Well, I do keep a lean figure but I made a mental note to con
ask Mom for a cheeseburger on a bun soon! After we all had our burgers, Mom brought
out the treat: a tri-tip steak sandwich.
BART: MMMMMmmmm steak sammich good!
MABEL: How do you know? You had never had one before.
BART: I could tell by the way you licked the sammich before
Auntie got it ready for us! You didn't even let Pip or Puddles go first!
MABEL: Well, I do love a good tri tip sandwich! Pip LOVED it
too but he was not ready to admit it
might be better than his beloved cheeseburgers! But he did agree that the tri tip made a
really nice chaser for a cheeseburger! I have to agree! At least the food made up for the scary trip to our creek!
It was so nice to meet Pip and Puddles in the furs! We loved
visiting with them and we sure hope they make it safely to their next Blogville
stop!

Rottrover Shoots Mabel
We've been hiking quite a bit with the Rottrover's newest addition, Otto . (I think I'm in love!) What a sweet boy! It breaks my heart to see him so skinny... but he's gained 10 pounds since moving in!
Ms. Rottrover had her fancy camera out with us yesterday...we need new photos for their new blog header... and she shot some lovely pics of Ms. Lou. Funny but Mabel hates posing for me but her Auntie Rottrover got lots of nice shots with no cookies and no threats!
Here's a couple:

Relentless Sadness
It would seem I missed my usual July funk but it hit with a vengeance in September. It's not one thing and it's not my mother... It's just a lot of things... I'm hoping by purging my list, I can purge my mind and move on...
- I miss Mango. I'm sobbing just writing his name. I know I didn't know him for reals, but my heart hurts just the same. He, his mom and his labradork brother, Dexter, brought much joy to many and especially to me. His sudden death while I had no phone or internets last week was shocking and painful. The big guys is sorely missed!
- I'm very sad about the state of sales of lampwork glass beads and the first world women that don't think their time is worth even Chinese wages. It's only served to reinforce how bad I need gainful employment... which makes me even sadder.
- The people who read that blog post in #2 and couldn't see past my sassy attitude to the point that I was actually trying to make tire me. Oh the tediousness of trying to explain that I would rather punch someone who hurts me and hurts my business instead of giving them a hug!
- It saddens me that, at the age of 48, I still feel the need to explain and apologize for being direct. I have been chastised my whole life for my tone and my direct nature. Everyone in my family speaks this way. NO ONE means to offend...certainly not me... yet we are all offended by each other. And the world is certainly offended by us. That has to be one of the top reasons I never wanted to marry. I simply didn't feel like apologizing any more and certainly not in the privacy of my own home. If a man is direct, no one says a word... but let a woman be direct and the world doesn't know what to do with her...especially since we don't burn them at the stake any more...
- We learned last week that my sister's tumors in her lungs are growing again, the first setback since stopping chemo seven months ago. We were told that people in this advanced stage of lung cancer usually only make it six months... so we've made another hurdle but it's so difficult being so far away. And dealing with a mother who is in denial and how that hurts my sister makes me even sadder.
- The relatives on Facebook who always ask me how she is but never take the time to pick up the phone or send her a card make me sad and angry.
- Add in that I have a sinus infection, no funds for the doc or antibiotics and it's a hundred and freaking six outside and you'll understand why I'm taking to my bed at 11 am on a Monday.

Header Facelift
I realized I threw up the new header with a rather strange post yesterday and thought I should instead give it a little more fan fare.
I've been longing for a header for quite a while and had a folder where I stashed some pics... and I used absolutely none of them! Instead, I was scrolling through my phone looking for a duck video when I found the last sunset pic I took at the creek before we moved on to other trails...ones without rangers. This shot is of a tree at the end of our levee and I will miss the amazing sunsets that we watched from that vista...so it's a bit melancholy for me:
As I kept scrolling through the phone, I found this pic of Mabel Lou and KNEW it had to be my new header. Seeing her smiling and alert is what makes creek hiking so joyful to me!
The picture just feels magical to me. It wasn't until I saw it up as part of the logo that I realized Bart is in the background too. How appropriate... even though he is not mine, he's our daily hiking buddy. Where we hike now...we see NO one! (The way I like it!) So I don't have to leave him home on "busy" nights.
That particular shot was also taken on the levee. Often, we would walk to where the water curves and I would lie down on the levee while the dogs took off on their own upstream for a bit. Eventually, Mabel would return and she always parks on my left. Bart favors my right... they love to come drip on me after a swim! The photo was shot as I was lying there looking at the sunset. I managed to get one of Bart earlier, looking the opposite direction:
Very cute, but not magical. No, Bart is the court jester of our pack and the photo of his Alien Butt Face is far more appropriate for the header. And since it appears that Mallory is going to be a permanent fixture here, it only seemed right to include her too. I've grown to love that silly duck!
Add in my favorite photo of me with a missing lens to my glasses and there you have it... all of the family in a header. Hope you like it!

Occupy the Couch!
Mabel Lou here. I'm here to share with you a horrible atrocity going on in the dog world! I am in shock I tell you and I'm certain you will be too!
Mr. Pip has had his comfy couch taken away and moved to the basement! He's requesting all his K9 friends "occupy the couch" in protest until he gets his beloved couch back!
So here I am, doing my part. But you know me... I just HAVE to take it to the next level. I'm urging everyone not to simply occupy the couch. No, you have to take control of the remote! My own mom is so upset over this, she's going to let Mr. Pip's pawrents know how important it is for him to get a couch immediately.
Now, THAT'S the power of the paw!

Rescue Me Week - Grumpy
Mayzie is hosting a Rescue Me week blog-a-thon in honor of her human Grandpa J who crossed the bridge recently! Since all my babies have been adopted, I thought it would be fun to play along.
This is our second entry in the contest! ;-)
We are playing for the Rottie Rescue of Los Angeles, where I've gotten most of my girls from. Today, I'm writing about a dog named Grumpy who apparently isn't... You know, you can change a dog's name. I often feel that I should... I want my dogs to think of their name as a happy song and I'm often concerned that their old name may have come to mean something negative. But back to Grumpy:
From the Rott Rescue site:
Grumpy - he isn't - has a good temperament, very social dog. An outside dog in his former home, big, very handsome boy. Sold as a potential show quality dog, disqualified due to medical condition called cryporchardism, an autosomal recessive trait. Cryptorchid dogs are not candidates for breeding/showing because the condition is heritable. Click here to fill out our adoption application.
For those of you reading along (I can't wait to read what Mango has to say about this!) Cryporchardism means... his 'nards didn't drop. While this makes him unbreedable... don't we have enough dogs in shelters anyway??? It doesn't require medical treatment. The boy just needs a good home!!!
If you can give Grumpy a home, please get in touch with the LA Rottie Rescue.
If you would like to play along too, today is the last day. Mayzie is going to draw names and choose FIVE winners and donate $100 green papers to the rescue organization of the winner's choice.

Rescue Me Week - Milly
Mayzie is hosting a Rescue Me week blog-a-thon in honor of her human Grandpa J who crossed the bridge recently! Since all my babies have been adopted, I thought it would be fun to play along.
We are playing for the Rottie Rescue of Los Angeles, where I've gotten most of my girls from. I was particularly drawn to Milly because that's what I named my first rotten. Isn't she gorgeous??
Milly
is a 3-year-old female. She came to us from an animal shelter in
central California with her mixed breed puppies. She is a sweet, gentle
soul who has had a difficult life. Milly is hoping for a home where she
will be safe and cared for. Click here to fill out our adoption application.
Here's a better look at her beautiful face:
If you can give Milly a home, I know just how grateful she would be. My Milly hated when I took off her collar... she knew that meant HOME!
The folks at Rottie Rescue ask you tons of questions - it seems down right annoying but... it's really a personality test to match you with the best fit possible. I've loved and adored the babies I got there!
