My mother and I have both noticed a recent trend in retail and I'm curious if any of you have noticed. It is the phenomenon of "All New Packaging!!!" and higher prices.

Examples: my mom loves Manda Sausage. It used to come in a 5lb. box and cost around 4.99. After the "new packaging" (i.e. a smaller box), it weighs in at 4lbs. and costs 5.99.

My personal favorite complaint is bleach. Have you noticed it is impossible to find a gallon of bleach anymore? I used to find it for around .99 at my local dollar stores. Now, it's 3/4 of a gallon and 1.29...HUH???

I understand prices going up but giving you less for the money at the same time they gouge you... something's not right. When my mom complained to her local butcher in Baton Rouge, his response was, "You mean you noticed the size change?" Apparently, they think we're all idiots.

My mom just doesn't buy Manda sausage anymore. But I can't get away with not buying bleach. Any thoughts, bloggers?

I noticed this trend a while back when my favorite brand of ice cream shrank their half-gallon package to 1-3/4 quarts. Also, I recently bought a package of Kellogg's Pop-Tarts. The box was the same size as always, and so was the foil envelope around each pair of Pop-Tarts, but the pastries themselves were at least a half-inch shorter than they used to be.

I think you're right: they DO think we're idiots.

Yes, it all started years ago with coffee - a one pound can was suddenly 13 ounces.

It's been downhill for weight and uphill for price, ever since. Bummer.

Wait - now I KNOW I left a comment here! Same thing happened on Rev. Dr. Kate's. Left a comment, went back a few days later - it was gone!

Grumble, grumble.

I think my real and original comment said something about how this whole trend was started with coffee - going from a full pound can to 13 ounces.

Grumble, Grumble.

Velvet, I love poptart but my frustration with them is the "icing." It's awful. I like mine buttered. AFter I noticed the prices going up, I switched to walmart brand. That's the only oens without the crappy, hard icing.

Sunflower, it's not you, it's me!!! I had to switch back to moderated after my slightly political post last week. My new boss sends me so many emails, it takes forever to get to personal ones! Sorry for the delay!! Thanks for visiting and your patience!
